Human rights

The rights of one person end, where the rights of another person begin - John B. Finch

Ofcourse there is a lot more to human rights than just this, regardless of how much sense the statement of Mr. Finch makes. Okay, well, he didn't exactly say this, but this is the gist of it. Before and even after he made this statement people have been fighting for their rights. It still took 2 worldwars before a general assembly of united nations sat down and wrote down a bunch of rights to award to their people. If you want to know what your rights are, you can find them here

Laws, rights and duties have been around a lot longer than that, obviousely. Even before Roman times there were social hierarchies and structures where people lived together and had some sort of rules describing as to what was or wasn't good or bad behaviour towards eachother. But I do imagine this usually was in favor of the dominant person or group.

During a conversation I recently was told, that rights are not determined by humans, because if that were so, then on demand, those rights can be taken away again. Well, this does still happen. Slavery still exists, for example. And I don't mean servitude. Look at the different kinds of discrimination against all kinds of groups of people. Their rights are still being violated and some groups try to take away rights from other people. And since rights are still violated, I don't think you can say, they were awarded by a supreme being or any other independent entity.

Out of about 195 coutries in the world, just about all of them has agreed upon the human rights as they were determined in 1948. This gives some good hope for the future, as to maintaining these human rights for all individuals. Unless ofcourse we do something incredibly stupid and turn this beautiful blue marble we live on, in to a distopian wasteland... but let's just stick with some good old positive thinking.
